Reconciliation

'Reconciliation', 2021, Black and White Ink on Charcoal Paper, 25.4 x 35.6cm. A mystical reunion rendered in black and white ink on a toned ground (beige paper).

Drawing with black and white pens on a 'toned ground' (aka; colored paper for those - like myself - who didn't go to art school) is one of my favorite drawing techniques. I like the way that I can develop form through crosshatching in both white and black while allowing the background color to be the midtone. So, what is the form being developed here?

Reconciliation looks like a marriage or some mystic courtship ritual. I rarely start a drawing with a story or message in mind. It takes form with the drawing, and it is still taking form because this drawing is the basis for a small painting that is in progress currently (July 2026). I suppose that the full meaning of this 'Reconciliation' will take form as the painting develops, and in my creative process this can take on an oracular meaning intertwined with my life's circumstances. I will post more about the painting in the future
