Suffragette City

This is a pen and ink version of one of the collages, "Dog Cream Cone Surveillance Childhood", from the Contraband collage series. There is also an acrylic painting version of this image that I will put online later.

David Bowie died in 2017, and from my perspective, it was the most significant death since John Lennon's murder. I can't remember more people mourning. Pope Francis's recent death was nowhere near as moving an event as the death of Bowie. It seemed to me that a true visionary prophet and collective voice of humanity had passed. However, I personally had never paid Bowie much attention and was only vaguely aware of his music (what planet had I been living on?). Radio stations and media outlets of all kinds, traditional and online, were holding Bowie memorials - playing his recordings continuously. I listened and became a Bowie fan, and titled this drawing, that I worked on while listening to his many songs, after one of my favorites, "Sufragette City".

At the time I thought that there were all sorts of correspondences between the imagery of this drawing and the lyrics of Sufragette City. I can't remember what those were, so I leave it to you to look at the drawing and listen to the song and make your own conclusions.
